Blackburn Wins Tennessee GOP Gubernatorial Nomination, Heads to November

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn won Tennessee’s Republican gubernatorial primary on August 6, 2026, becoming the first woman to win the party’s nomination for governor in the state’s history. She captured 43.8% of the primary vote despite polls in the final weeks showing a tightening race.

U.S. Rep. John Rose finished second with 32.7%. State Rep. Monty Fritts of Kingston received 23.4%.

The margin was wider than late polling suggested. Rose had invested heavily in the race, injecting $5 million of his own money into his campaign but delaying advertising until May 2026. Blackburn launched her first ad in June.

30 Years of Republican Politics Built Blackburn’s Advantage

Blackburn’s political organization runs deep in Tennessee. She built the first Young Republicans chapter outside East Tennessee in Williamson County in the early 1980s and later chaired the Williamson County Republican Party. She won a Tennessee Senate seat in 1998, flipped a congressional district in 2002, and defeated former Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen by 12 percentage points in the 2018 U.S. Senate race. That Senate race ranked as the seventh most expensive in the 2018 cycle, with more than $90 million spent by candidates and outside groups combined.

Blackburn did not announce her gubernatorial run until August 2025, nearly a year after winning reelection to her Senate seat. Rose announced in March 2025 but never closed the name-recognition gap.

What the General Election Looks Like

Blackburn now heads into a November 2026 general election in a state that Republicans have dominated at the statewide level for more than a decade. Tennessee has not elected a Democratic governor since Phil Bredesen’s second term ended in 2011. Turnout in primaries and contested downballot races will shape whether that changes.
